CLASS PROJECT
SPRING 2024
Produced a short animated title sequence for a fictional movie premise. Developed motion design ability through both tweening and frame-by-frame animation techniques.
MOVIE CONCEPT
After consideration of several ideas, the chosen movie concept was a dramedy/science-fiction centered around time travel. In short, a boy in high school named David stumbles upon a device that gives him the ability to undo any action. He becomes very reliant on it, using it for the next 7 years to make his life easier and become successful. Unfortunately, it ends up getting misplaced and David goes on a wild, desperate chase to find it. View the provided image to read the whole pitch!
The title sequence would occur in the movie soon after he initially finds the device, playfully displaying the antics a teenage boy might get up with this newfound ability.

VISUAL DIRECTION
The visual style was arrived at through mood boarding and early style frame generation. Based on the title sequence’s playful subject matter, the style needed to help portray a lighthearted comedic tone.
Ultimately, it was decided that the title sequence would be composed of simple and clean shapes, solid contrasting colors and gradients, and a stick figure character. This played into the youthfulness and excitement of the scene while maximizing clarity.

STORYBOARDING
Through storyboarding, it was decided that the character would get into risky situations to practice their newfound ability, as that might be how a teenager would first try out this power. These risks become larger and larger as the sequence progresses, showing increased confidence and reliance in the device over time.

ANIMATION PROCESS
As the stick-figure character animation took inspiration from the type of work popularized by Alan Becker, it seemed necessary to stay true to the genre by animating it frame-by-frame. This was done in Adobe Animate, allowing for more control over movement and poses with the added benefit of being a valuable learning experience.
Other elements, like the bike and environments, were created in Illustrator, brought into After Effects, and finally merged with the character animation for unified appearance.

FINAL RESULT
After additional actions such as light music syncing, subtle camera shakes, and other effects, the title sequence was complete.
